Qualification and Certification of NDT Personnel - Thermal / Infrared Testing Level I
Introduction:
- This technical proposal outlines our program for the qualification and certification of NDT personnel in Thermal/Infrared Testing Level I. The program is designed and delivered in strict compliance with ANSI/ASNT CP-189:2024 and ANSI/ASNT CP-105, ensuring full adherence to the certification requirements of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT).
- Oversight, approval, and final certification will be provided by an ASNT Level III in
- Thermal/Infrared Testing
- The scope of this program is to train, examine, and certify candidates to NDT Level I in Thermal/Infrared Testing. The certification process covers training, vision examinations, written examinations General, Specific & practical demonstrations, and final certification records.
Qualification & Training Requirements:
- Training Hours: Minimum of 32 hours, as per ANSI/ASNT CP-189:2024.
- Training Content: Topics as defined in ANSI/ASNT CP-105, supplemented with additional modules required by the client and approved by the ASNT Level III.
- Instruction: Delivered by qualified NDT Instructors, under the designation and oversight of an ASNT Level III. Specialists (e.g., metallurgists, welding engineers) may support delivery where relevant.
- Credit: Training credit is granted only upon successful completion of the final examination.
Examinations:
6.1 Vision Examinations
- Near Vision: Ability to read Jaeger No. 1 (or equivalent) at ≥12 inches, natural or corrected.
- Color Vision: Demonstrated ability to distinguish required colors/shades.
- Administered per approved procedures, under ASNT Level III oversight.
6.2 Written Examinations
General Exam:
- Approved by ASNT Level III.
- Covers body of knowledge in ANSI/ASNT CP-105.
- Minimum 40 questions (per ANSI/ASNT CP-189:2024).
Specific Exam:
- Approved by ASNT Level III.
Practical Examination:
- Candidate demonstrates proficiency by testing representative samples.
- Results documented and evaluated under ASNT Level III supervision.
Passing Rate:
- For General Exam, each candidate shall achieve a grade of at least 70%.
- For Specific Exam, each candidate shall achieve a grade of at least 70%.
- For practical examinations, each candidate shall achieve a grade of at least 80%.
- A composite average grade of 80% is required to be eligible for certification.
Certification & Records:
- Certification: Issued upon successful completion of General, Specific, and Practical exams.
- Record: Maintained as per CP-189:2024, including:
- Candidate’s name and NDT method.
- Certification level and technique(s) covered.
- Limitations, if any.
- Examination results.
- Certification and expiration dates.
- Verification by ASNT Level III signature.
- Re-Examination: Candidates who fail must undergo additional training or wait 30 days before re-attempt.
Learning Outcomes
- The Level II course purpose is to ensure that participants are competent to operate their equipment and take thermograms that are suitable for analysing, for whatever the required purpose; including guidance on analysis of images, producing reports, and understanding the limitations and possibilities of thermography.
- The Level 2 course is run at a significantly higher level than the level I course, with more complex mathematical manipulation.
- Collect quality data, accurate temperature readings, and account for measurement effects such as distance and emissivity using infrared cameras.
- Interpret thermographs and make informed decisions using heat transfer concepts to analyze thermal images, and see the latest in infrared inspection report generation and database software.
- Avoid costly mistakes – learn to distinguish between hot spots and reflections, direct vs. indirect readings and qualitative vs. quantitative thermography.
- Challenge yourself with field applications labs that closely simulate real-world infrared applications.
